Mr Prime Minister,
I have a lot of respect for the role you have held for nine years now.
I spent a long time in the corridors of power in Ottawa as a political employee. I had the chance to see your first steps as Prime Minister, I was in the antechamber on the other side of the House of Commons.
In 2015, you did not steal the election, Canadians wanted change and you answered that call. Canadians believed in your promise to run small deficits to invest in our infrastructure. However, this is not what happened.
The big deficits are there, year after year, and we don’t see the moment when you will rebalance the books.
Help people
Inflation hurts and you want to help, I understand. But why checks now?
Yes, we are overtaxed and taxed. I will always applaud politicians who want to leave more money in the pockets of taxpayers.
But it takes structured steps and it must be part of a coherent plan. Unfortunately, we don’t feel that your announcement last week fits into this approach.
Like millions of Canadians, I have worked hard since leaving school and made a good living. So, I can tell you that I did not expect to receive $250 this spring from your government.
Keep it!
So, I invite you to keep the check for $250 that you wanted to send me.
You will probably find another way to spend it. Because I don’t believe that leaving such an enormous deficit to future generations is the best thing to do at this time.
I wish you, Mr Prime Minister, a good end of the parliamentary session.
Kind regards,
Marc-André Leclerc
