Iga Swiatek (WTA 2), winner of five Grand Slam tournaments, has accepted a one-month suspension. The 23-year-old Polish woman tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine, a heart medication known as TMZ.
Swiatek tested positive in an out-of-competition doping test in August. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted his explanation that the result was unintentional and was caused by contamination of an over-the-counter medication, melatonin. Swiatek was taking this product for jet lag and sleep problems.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency determined that his level of misconduct was “at the lower end of the range corresponding to the absence of significant fault or negligence”said ITIA.
This year, Swiatek (23) won the French Open tournament in June, his fifth major title, and won bronze at the Paris Olympics in early August.
