In Senegal, anemia among children is reaching alarming proportions. Indeed, according to Professor Saliou Diouf, pediatrician specializing in nutrition, 71% of children suffer from it, mainly due to iron deficiency.
“Iron deficiency results in a deficit of this vital element in the body. In toddlers, it is a very widespread deficiency, with major repercussions on their overall development, particularly on their cognitive abilities. This is why it is crucial to prevent this problem, which remains particularly frequent in Africa,” he stressed, during the second training session on child nutrition organized by Ama Academy,
An opportunity for the pediatrician specializing in nutrition to highlight the importance of essential micronutrients such as iron, vitamin A, zinc, iodine and calcium for children’s health.
According to him, a deficiency in these elements can have serious consequences, particularly on the physical health, cognitive development and immune system of young people.
