Euro 2024: the match between the French team and the Belgians seen from a bar in Auxerre: “it wasn’t pretty”

In a bar in the Clairions area of Auxerre, dozens of supporters of the French team watched the match against Belgium together. They brought their flags and wore their best jerseys. A Euro 1/8 final is not to be missed.

It took until the 85th minute for the opening goal, but finally the French team qualified for the quarter-finals of the Euro on July 1st with a narrow score of 1-0. “And still no goal from the French…”, sighs a supporter. Since the start of the Euro, the French team has scored only twice, against Austria (1-0) and against Poland (1-1). For this face-off with the Red Devils, it was player Jan Vertonghen who scored an own goal on a strike from striker Kolo Muani.

“It’s a mess”

Despite this victory, the supporters are only half happy. “It’s really mixed, they’re going to have to get moving for the future”one of them says as he leaves the bar, his jersey on his shoulders. “It wasn’t pretty, it’s still not pretty as often, we’re not having fun but the most important thing is the victory, let’s say that”another one slips.

“It’s a mess” for Kevin who thinks that the French team had luck on their side for this match but “I’m not sure we’re ready for a possible final…” he adds. In the meantime, the Blues, who played against the Belgians in Düsseldorf, remain in Germany and play again on July 5 in Hamburg for the quarter-finals.

The supporters came to the meeting but the atmosphere was far from electric for these round of 16 matches. © Radio France
