While Jordan Bardella invited Jean-Luc Mélenchon to debate, the day after the first round of the legislative elections, Marine Tondelier, national secretary of the Ecologists, invited the president of the RN to an exchange before the vote on July 7.

The day after the first round of the legislative elections, which saw the National Rally make a significant breakthrough with 33.15% of the vote, a new debate is emerging between the union of the left and the far right.

While Jordan Bardella invited Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, to debate, Marine Tondelier, national secretary of the Ecologists, in response, wanted to discuss with the president of the RN. “We divided up the debates within the New Popular Front. After Manuel Bompard and Olivier Faure, it is my turn to represent our coalition at our 3rd debate,” she declared on her social networks.

“Marine Tondelier is the right person to talk to”

While Jean-Luc Mélenchon declined Jordan Bardella’s proposal, inviting him to turn to “Manuel Bompard, Mathilde Panot, or Clémence Guetté”, other members of the left-wing coalition say they are in favour of Marine Tondelier taking on Jordan Bardella.

“She is the right person to talk to,” said Clémentine Autain, a rebellious MP re-elected in the first round, this Monday before the National Assembly.

As a reminder, Marine Tondelier’s political commitment is strongly marked by her fight against the National Rally. Indeed, the leader of the ecologist party is also a municipal councilor in Hénin-Beaumont (Pas-de-Calais), a town held by the RN.

She also faced Marine Le Pen, MP for the constituency, three times during the legislative elections. In 2022, Marine Tondelier even failed in the second round against the three-time presidential candidate, with 38.97% of the vote.
