Gabriel Attal “assumes” suspending unemployment insurance reform

Invited on TF1, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal assumed the suspension of the reform of the unemployment insurance system. The publication of the decree was reportedly perceived as “a form of forcing through”.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, a guest on TF1 this Monday, July 1, the day after the first round of legislative elections, declared that he “assumes” the suspension of the reform of the unemployment insurance system.

Recalling that this reform is “necessary”, as Emmanuel Macron did during his press conference on June 12, the Prime Minister considered that publishing the decree between the two rounds would be perceived as “a form of forcing through”.

“We have heard the message of the French people and the message of the ballot boxes: we must govern differently, work more together with other political forces for the interests of the French people,” he added.

Current rules extended

The reform of the compensation mechanism, carried out by the government, which notably toughens the conditions of affiliation, had been strongly criticized by left-wing forces and unions.

In order not to leave a legal vacuum, a joint decree was published by the government to extend the current rules and allow unemployment benefits until the end of July.

The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, invited this Monday morning to react to this suspension of the reform on France Inter, declared that he was “very circumspect about the guarantees that can be given, about the positions of circumstances, about the accommodations, about the calculations”.
