The people of Meyrin accepted on Sunday by 58.37% the credit of 87.4 million francs intended for the redevelopment of the city center. Work is due to begin in 2025 with delivery of the public park in 2026 and the inauguration of the new citizenship center towards the end of 2027.
The Coeur de Cité project, considered the most important of the 2021-2025 legislature, aims to reclassify the entire perimeter of Place des Cinq-Continents. Led by the executive, this project was supported by almost the entire Municipal Council. The Citizenship House will notably house the new town hall.
The project provides for the creation of a park and a wood. More than 250 trees must be planted as well as 15,000 m2 of meadow. A public square is designed on two levels: one at the lower entrance to the shopping center and another higher which will extend above the 475-space underground car park, currently under construction.
The referendum voters, former elected officials from several parties, denounced a “disproportionate and oversized” project. According to the referendum committee, the current town hall could have been enlarged and transformed rather than building a “mastodon”. “

The people of Meyrin also accepted on Sunday an initiative which aims to maintain the equestrian arena in the town. The initiators believe that the carousel is part of the historical heritage of the town.
This equestrian center, which benefits from surface rights until 2026, was initially supposed to free up the land in order to host events, such as the school festival or that of August 1st. In the end, there will be time to move it and rebuild it on another municipal site.
A counter-proposal, supported by all parties except the UDC which was behind the initiative, gave it a four-year reprieve, i.e. until 2030, while adding a provision on respect for animal welfare. The initiative was accepted by 59.98% of voters and the counter-project by 59.91%.
The subsidiary question made it possible to decide between the two texts, with a very small lead of 70 votes for the initiative which won by 50.62% of the votes. The participation rate reached 36.82%.
