Donald Trump was convicted of 34 forgery offenses for trying to conceal the payment of $130,000 to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
A New York judge ordered this Friday, November 22, the postponement of Donald Trump's sentencing in the Stormy Daniels affair, to allow the president-elect's lawyers to request the cancellation of the legal proceedings due to his upcoming return at the White House.
Donald Trump, who was convicted of 34 forgery offenses by a jury in May for trying to hide the $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels in an effort to cover up a sex scandal during his first electoral campaign, in 2016, was to receive his sentence this Tuesday.
The Manhattan prosecutor's office, however, this week asked Juan Merchan, judge at the Supreme Court of the State of New York, to consider postponing all proceedings related to this case until the end of the mandate of the president-elect, who will begin on January 20.
“Obstacles anticonstitutionnels”
Donald Trump's lawyers intend to request the outright cancellation of the procedure, arguing that it would pose “unconstitutional obstacles” to his ability to govern. The Manhattan prosecutor's office said it would contest this interpretation but recognized Donald Trump's lawyers the right to make their arguments in writing.
Juan Merchan gave them Friday until December 2 to file their request for cancellation of the procedure, and gave the prosecution until December 9 to respond. The magistrate, however, did not specify how long he would take to rule on this request and did not set any new date for the possible sentencing of Donald Trump.
“Disconnected from reality”
In an interview with the British newspaper Daily Mirror at the beginning of June, Stormy Daniels, former porn star, violently attacked Trump: “I think he should be sentenced to prison and community service for working for the less fortunate.”
She reported death threats she received from Trump supporters and warned “the world” in the run-up to the American presidential election, regarding the candidacy of the now president-elect, assuring that the latter is “completely out of touch of reality.”
