Baku, Nov 20 (APS) – The young climate champion for COP 29 in Azerbaijan, Leyla Hasanova, considers the 2.4% of climate funds allocated to children and young people insufficient.
”It’s simply not enough, because age-appropriate climate finance must be a central part of our common approach,” she said.
She spoke at a press briefing in the presence of several high-ranking figures from the COP bodies, including the executive secretary of the UNFCCC secretariat, Simon Stiell.
”We are working closely in unity with the UNFCCC executive secretariat and with our colleagues from previous and future COP presidencies, to better integrate this role of climate champion into the system,” he said. she indicated.
“Together, we seek to strengthen the continuity of climate action for children and young people,” she added. She considers that this subject is so important that it should not be fashionable from year to year.
Leyla Hasanova urged parties to keep young people at the heart of their discussions in the coming days at COP 29.
”We call on all parties to develop age-appropriate climate plans and meaningfully involve young people in the development, implementation and execution of these plans,” she pleaded.
“As we drive action by increasing climate finance, I urge all stakeholders to find ways to direct resources to vulnerable youth and children,” she reiterated.
Launched on November 11, the 29th Conference of the Parties which takes place in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024 is in its final stretch to find a new quantified and ambitious agreement on financing, one of the pillars of global climate action.
