  • In 2022, a site in the canton of Zurich was chosen to host a deep nuclear dump

  • The authorization request will be submitted to the Confederation on November 19

  • Without delay, a group of scientists and political figures warn of the risks of the project

The people must be able to vote directly at the ballot box on the creation of a deep nuclear dump in Stadel, in the Zurich Unterland. This is the message launched this Friday by a committee of scientists and political figures. “If we can vote on issues like cow horns, it is all the more essential to vote when it comes to burying highly radioactive materials,” argued Harald Jenny, project manager at of the independent body supporting the Swiss deep layer repository (USBT), during a press conference in Bern. “This is a project with implications for a million years, or 30,000 generations,” insisted the physicist.

The date of this communication owes nothing to chance. The committee intends to keep up the pressure. Next Tuesday, Nagra (National Cooperative Society for the Storage of Radioactive Waste) will submit a request for general authorization to the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) for the construction of the deep geological repository on the site in question “Nördlich Lägern”. On this occasion, the body will submit to the Confederation no fewer than thirteen documents based on 200 scientific reports totaling around 30,000 pages. “This is a historic step, although not very encouraging, in this whole process, on which the people of Stadel have practically nothing to say,” regretted the former Zurich Liberal Green MP Karin Joss, co-president. of the LoTi association (“Nördlich Lägern without deposit”).
