Construction
Like any good watch intended foroutdoorthe Amazfit T-Rex 3 is imposing. Its case measuring 48.5 x 48.5 x 13.75 mm, therefore beware of small wrists which could risk disappearing behind it. It also weighs its weight (68.3 g), but here, no MIL-STD-810 military certification.
The T-Rex is waterproof up to 10 ATM, enough to withstand snow, showers, swimming and even some high-speed water sports, such as jet skiing. It will even be possible to dive in his company, up to 45 m deep, announces the manufacturer via dedicated certification. As for extreme conditions or dust, the manufacturer claims that the case operates without problem between -30°C and +70°C.
Otherwise, the watch is overall very well finished. The plastic case is thus topped with a stainless steel bezel and a very well-made 1.5-inch Oled screen. Very bright (2000 cd/m² announced), it is also capable of being discreet so as not to dazzle at night. Finally, the panel displays in 480 x 480 pixels for a resolution of 322 ppi. Nothing to say on that side. The silicone strap is not standard – a small screwdriver is provided to assemble and disassemble it – but it is very pleasant and does not irritate in any way.
User experience
The T-Rex 3 runs under ZeppOS 4, the Amazfit operating system which integrates GPT-4o from OpenAI. This partnership allows the manufacturer to implement Zepp Flow, its voice assistant. Since the watch incorporates a microphone, it is possible to invoke this artificial intelligence to configure your watch, access certain data or even dictate a response to a message. All with variable fortune…
This assistant presents itself as a third way to navigate the T-Rex 3, the first two being the buttons and the touch screen. Let's start with the four push buttons arranged in pairs on the edges of the case. Basically, they follow the Garmin layout, minus the brightness button. The two left keys allow you to scroll the menus from top to bottom, while the upper right button is used to validate and the lower right button returns to the previous screen.
By sliding a finger up and down, a shortcut screen is displayed and allows you to launch Show mode, Do not disturb or even adjust the brightness. With a reverse swipe of the finger, the different metrics measured by the T-Rex 3 scroll through: number of steps, heart rate or even weather. Notifications are accessible by swiping your finger from left to right, while a movement from right to left sends you to the main menu.
Overall, navigation is pleasant and smooth. Notifications are displayed comfortably thanks to the large screen size. As mentioned previously, it is possible to respond to text messages using voice, but it is impossible to call directly from your wrist, as the T-Rex 3 does not have a speaker. If the watch has an NFC chip, Zepp Pay is not really available in France, due to a lack of partnership with banks. However, it is possible to store music directly on the tocante via the Zepp app.
Here, no third-party app, it will not be possible to install Strava, Deezer and others. You will therefore have to make do with the apps pre-installed by Amazfit.
The T-Rex 3 synchronizes with the Zepp app (iOS, Android) which has greatly evolved recently. It is divided into four parts. The first gives access to all the data measured by the watch; we find raw metrics (number of steps, heart rate), but also energy scores calculated based on sleep or activity. Suffice to say that the app is not stingy with data.
The second part is dedicated to exercise. There you can find, for example, a history of all recorded activities. The third part is a little special, because it concerns Zepp Aura, an AI developed by Amazfit for “improve mental and physical health”. Depending on the shape of the day, it offers a choice of personalized music to relax, but also a wealth of advice. Note that many of Zepp Aura's features require payment.
Finally, the last section allows you to directly configure your T-Rex 3. You select the home screen, notifications and manage the apps available on your wrist.
Sport & Health
The Amazfit T-Rex 3 houses a heart rate monitor, dual-band GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometric altimeter, ambient light sensor, and temperature sensor.
Let's start with dual-band GPS… Whether in town or in nature, its tracks remain faithful to reality. They never venture into a building or a lake, we can trust him.
The heart rate monitor also ensures quality measurements. During an outing without variation in intensity, the values remained very close to those measured by our Polar H10 chest strap which we consider to be very reliable.
During a split exercise, the results are less convincing. If the curves point in the right direction, the maximum values are largely underestimated. Thus, the Amazfit succeeds in detecting rapid changes, but not precisely.
Finally, the watch tracks the user's sleep, general fitness and even oxygen saturation. So much data that we are not able to verify, due to lack of a dedicated laboratory. However, this information seems consistent with our feelings, only the wake-up time wanders a lot (generally 40 min too late).
