Bucharest – Morocco’s active participation in the high-level meeting launching the American initiative of the Global Forum for the Prevention of Nuclear and Radiological Terrorism “Global FTPRNT”, illustrates the Kingdom’s firm commitment to the fight against this phenomenon and the strengthening of international and regional cooperation in this area.

At this meeting, held November 13-15 in Bucharest, Romania, by the US Department of State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, the Director of United Nations and International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Redouane Houssaini, highlighted the security challenges facing the international community in the current geopolitical context.

This new “Global FTPRNT” initiative, he said, constitutes an adequate framework for innovative coordination to prevent and respond to the threats of nuclear and radiological terrorism.

Mr. Houssaini affirmed that given the serious emerging security challenges facing the African continent, Morocco, in accordance with the High Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, remains committed to the strategic objectives of the fight against nuclear terrorism, which advocate a proactive and multidimensional approach, through national measures and contributions to capacity building in African countries as well as the promotion of subregional, regional and international cooperation.

The official also emphasized the need to adapt the reading and analysis grids of the security threats facing the African continent, particularly in the Sahel region.

Thus, he highlighted the proven and growing links between terrorist groups and separatist militias, transnational organized crime and the threat of proxies to monopolize and divert nuclear, radiological and chemical materials for criminal and terrorist purposes. and biological as well as the use of new technologies.

While welcoming the launch of this American initiative, Mr. Houssaini stressed that this cooperation and collaboration framework must have an operational character to best meet the expectations of African countries, particularly in terms of capacity building.

Morocco considers that the objectives assigned to the “Global FTPRNT” initiative constitute a continuation of the important work already accomplished within the framework of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (IGLTN), he added, recalling that The Kingdom, one of the founding countries of the IGLTN in 2006, has since then organized several activities and exercises as chair of the “implementation evaluation group” working group.

More than 70 countries participated in this meeting to launch the “Global FTPRNT” initiative as well as UN agencies such as the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office (UNOCT) and the International Security Agency. Atomic Energy (IAEA).

In addition to Mr. Houssaini, the Moroccan delegation to this meeting is made up of HM the King’s ambassador in Bucharest, Hassan Abouyoub, as well as officials from the Ministry of the Interior and the General Directorate of National Security.
