In July, at the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Republican Party delegates adopted a key text: the party's “platform” for the November 2024 presidential election — a document that details what the party's priorities will be if its candidate enters the White House. After leaving aside the exercise in 2020, simply renewing the 2016 platform, the program that was prepared for this electoral cycle is therefore completely new.

No other text better illustrates than this project the way in which Trump succeeded in phagocytizing the Grand Old Party since its first victory in 2016. In eight years, the size of the document has been reduced by three-quarters. Trump's name is mentioned 19 times — more than once per page on average. For comparison, in 2012, the name of the Republican Party's presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was mentioned only once in the 62 pages of the platform.

The style of the document itself is heavily influenced by Trump's.

The candidate, now president-elect, had personally contributed to the edition of the platform by dictating his requests for modifications by voice messages. Its priorities, translated below, are written entirely in capital letters. Trump wanted to double the number of major principles of the Republican Party, which increased this year from 10 to 20.

The content of Donald Trump's program, dedicated to “the forgotten men and women of America”, consists more of a sometimes shaky assembly – each time a specific theme put forward by Trump – than a real organic whole which reflects his vision of governance. While the language on abortion has been softened and references to conversion therapy for gay people have been removed, Trump nevertheless pledges to “prevent men from participating in women's sports” and to “make campuses whole again patriotic.”

Like the Trump style, the Republican program is shorter, direct, punctuated by capital letters – which we keep in the publication of the twenty-point summary translated here – and, sometimes, deliberately vague. We find there the anti-migrant rhetoric and its objective of “carrying out the largest deportation in American history” – without more details being provided on the logistics of such an operation nor on the retained status of the people who will be concerned . Monday, November 11, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he would make Tom Homan director ofImmigration and Customs Enforcement during his first term, his “ Border Czar “. Homan, who would head a broad, yet undefined portfolio, said in late October that raids by authorities on construction sites employing workers without work permits would resume under Trump, after being halted for four years.
