UA military ceremony took place Monday in front of the Congress Column in Brussels in honor of the unknown soldier, the deceased of the two World Wars and the soldiers killed during peacekeeping missions since 1945. King Philippe filed a wreath of flowers and rekindled the flame at the foot of the Congress column, where the tomb of the unknown soldier is located.
The presidents of the House and the Senate as well as several representatives of the federal government and the judiciary also attended the ceremony, as well as representatives of the police, Defense, NATO and foreign armed forces in Belgium . This ceremony takes place every year on November 11, the day of the signing of the Armistice which ended the First World War in 1918.
Upon his arrival, King Philippe first took the time to inspect and greet the guard of honor. After laying a wreath of flowers at the foot of the Congress column, the King then rekindled the flame of the unknown soldier. Finally, the sovereign greeted the presidents of several patriotic organizations and associations of war invalids.
On Monday afternoon, the federal government will also commemorate, for the second time, Congolese soldiers killed during the two World Wars. The Secretary of State for Equal Opportunities Marie-Colline Leroy will attend a ceremony around 2:00 p.m. in front of the memorial monument in honor of the troops of the African campaigns, located at Square François Riga in Schaerbeek.
