Three residents, including an eight-month-old baby, lost their lives on Saturday, and another child is in critical condition following a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 401, in southern Ontario .

The accident occurred around 1:15 p.m. westbound, near the Route 40 interchange at Quinte West.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the accident occurred when a minivan collided with the rear of a semi-trailer truck.

The deaths of a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were noted at the scene, while the death of the eight-month-old baby was declared at the hospital, said the OPP.

A four-year-old child was also flown to a Toronto trauma center for treatment of serious injuries.

“All are from Laval, Quebec,” added the police.

The truck driver was not injured.

An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding this accident.
