The Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) awarded the Reflet d’Or for best feature film on Saturday evening to the Canadian film “A Universal Language,” by Matthew Rankin. This 30th edition, which lasted ten days, ends on Sunday.
“A Universal Language” tells the story of a man returning to his hometown of Winnipeg, in a Canada that has become Persian-speaking, to visit his mother. This film is a beautiful tribute to Iranian cinema, between exploration of memory and chance encounters, notes GIFF.
The series “Bullshit” and “Les Indociles” also
The golden reflection for best series goes to the Danish film “Bullshit” by Milad Alami, Bo Hr. Hansen and Molly Malene Stensgaard, GIFF said in a press release on Saturday. The golden reflection for the best immersive experience goes to Frenchman Gwenael François for “Oto’s Planet”. The “Future is sensitive” prize goes to the Greek Alexandros Avranas for “Quiet Life”. The Belgian-Swiss series “Les Indociles” wins the first edition of the “Swiss Series Storytelling Award”.
Big names in audiovisual visited Geneva, including Kirill Serebrennikov, Noémie Merlant, Leos Carax, Louis Garrel, Doria Tillier, Niels Schneider, Pierre Koralnik, Pierre Monnard, Lindsay Shapero and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Valeria Golino , recalls the festival.
GIFF is delighted that many screenings were sold out. Attendance by young audiences has also increased. However, consolidated attendance figures will be communicated later. The 31st edition of the festival will take place from October 31 to November 9, 2025.
