It is now possible to know, for each Vaud school, the results of the cantonal reference tests (ECR) for the last five years. If parents already receive these results for their children, the overall data was until now reserved for management for their establishment or for teaching staff for their respective classes.
The posting of this data online (on www.vd.ch/ecr) was decided by the Department of Education and Vocational Training following a media request (24 hours in this case) for the 2020-2021 results, explains the State of Vaud in a press release on Thursday.
The ECRs are standardized tests, submitted to all young Vaudois in 4th, 6th and 8th years. They make it possible to measure the progress of students, but also to manage teaching at the cantonal level. The Department of Education cites the example of the Covid years: the ECRs were useful to verify that the supports put in place had enabled students to follow the planned program.
This indicator, however, has its limits, warns the Canton. This notably warns against a comparison between schools. Because if the tests are the same everywhere, this is not the case for establishments which have very varied organizations, sizes and socio-demographic contexts.
Above 4 on average
ECRs are “like a photograph of a given moment in a class”, also underlines the Department. And to add: you can be excellent in a class which had a bad result in the ECR, or the opposite. Likewise, a class can have very good results in an establishment that did less well on a test, or the opposite.
The subjects assessed during the ECRs are French (4th, 6th and 8th), maths (6th and 8th) and German (8th). It is especially in 8th grade that the ECRs have a significant influence since the grade obtained in the three subjects represents 30% of the annual averages for each of the disciplines.
Between 2019 and 2024, the cantonal averages of ECR were 4.57 (8th), 4.91 (6th) and 5.01 (4th). “It is pleasing to note for families and for Vaud schools that all schools obtain, on average over the last five years and in the three levels, averages above 4.0, which means success,” comments the Department of Education.
It is in Blonay-St-Légier that the average of the 2019-2024 ECRs is the best in 8th grade (5.0), while the worst is to be found in Aigle (4.12). In 6th, Lutry (5.18) achieved the best results during this period, Aigle the worst (4.55). Finally in 4th, where the assessments were converted into grades, Lutry (5.55) also came in front, while Payerne-Granges had the worst average (4.39).
