Now an example in peace, Morocco demonstrates an edifying resilience in the face of security challenges. The Ministry of the Interior affirmed that the security situation in the country is “stable and under control”, revealing that indicators for the fight against crime in all its forms show that Morocco remains far from global crime rates.
In reviewing its achievements for the year 2024, the ministry indicated that the number of crimes and offenses recorded during the first seven months of this year amounts to approximately 641,900 cases.
The same document specifies that “cases of attacks on persons and property represent approximately 47% of the total cases recorded at the national level”.
Regarding the geographical distribution of crime in Morocco, the Ministry of the Interior indicated that it is mainly concentrated in urban areas, where 69% of crimes and offenses are recorded, while rural areas record 31%. offenses.
The report, attached to other documents for the discussion of the ministry’s annexed budget in the House of Representatives, reveals that “the efforts of local authorities and security services have achieved a case resolution rate of 91%, with the arrest and transfer to court of approximately 471,550 individuals, 4% of whom are minors”.
Regarding offenses and crimes that affect the feeling of security of citizens, their number amounts to approximately 206,170 cases, or approximately 32% of the total cases recorded.
Although recorded crime statistics remain modest compared to those of countries publishing regular data on this phenomenon, the ministry indicated that its services noted that the level of feeling of insecurity among citizens “does not always correspond to the reality of crime”. Furthermore, the dramatization of certain ordinary crimes, the proliferation of rumors, and the treatment of these cases by certain media contribute to amplifying this feeling of insecurity without it being justified by objective data, according to the report.
The said document further specifies that “the services of the Ministry of the Interior have focused on the fight against certain aspects of crime which are of particular concern to public opinion and affect the feeling of security, in particular the carrying of bladed weapons to intimidate, the trafficking of hallucinogenic substances and drugs, thefts in public places, as well as crimes committed near schools. They also ensured that they responded quickly to citizen complaints, particularly those related to attacks followed by theft.”.
Regarding the fight against new drugs, such as “bouffa” or the “crack”, which pose security challenges and represent criminal risks for public order and security, approximately 780 cases relating to “bouffa” were recorded between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2024. More than a thousand people were arrested and more than 13.9 kilograms of this drug were seized.
