Questioned for his expressed support for Donald Trump, Federal Councilor Albert Rösti explained himself on Sunday evening. He admits that a federal councilor does not have to comment on elections abroad.

“I answered a question from a student more like Albert Rösti, but I am well aware that a federal councilor must not comment on elections abroad,” declared the Bernese on the RTS television news. He was reacting to the controversy created by his words.

A week ago, in front of an audience of Basel students, he said he was “personally more for Donald Trump”. According to him, he is “the only president who did not lead America into war for four years,” he declared. However, he added that he had “pain” with “his personality”, according to comments reported by the Tamedia newspapers.

This position regarding an election in another country was criticized in the Swiss political sphere.
