In Burkina Faso, a preacher was banned from preaching in the mosques of the Muslim Community, one of the country’s Muslim associations. It is a decision of the president of the Superior Council of Ulemas, responsible for Islamic Affairs of the Muslim community. This ban follows “radical” preaching by this imam according to leaders of the Muslim community.
The president of the Superior Council of Ulemas, responsible for Islamic affairs of the Muslim community, accuses preacher Ousseini Kaboré of regularly giving “radical and inappropriate sermons” in mosques.
Cheick Mahamoudou Bandé underlines that the preacher’s preaching is likely to radicalize the Muslim faithful and disturb public order. Therefore, he is prohibited from preaching or leading any prayer in any mosques of the association in order to preserve “order, discipline and good harmony” in the mosques.
The head of Islamic affairs for the Muslim community warns that in the event of non-compliance with this decision, he will be held responsible for “his actions” and treated in accordance with “the laws and regulations in force”.
A sanction which comes on the same day as the installation of a committee responsible for monitoring sermons and comments in the media and social networks. Committee whose mission is to note abuses and propose sanctions.
On October 25, the Federation of Islamic Associations denounced dangerous deviations in religious discourse, and called on all preachers and imams to promote discourse free of violence, hatred and sectarianism.
