A most unusual error was recently made by a company responsible for renovating a bridge in Charleroi (Belgium). It was supposed to replace barriers but installed the new ones… on the wrong bridge, reports the RTBF Wednesday October 30, 2024.
The work was to be carried out on a bridge belonging to the Walloon Region, above the Charleroi-Brussels canal. Except that another similar structure is located right next door, a few hundred meters away, with the difference that this one is the property of the city of Charleroi.
A “meatball” at €52,000
The Walloon Public Service therefore launched a call for tenders to replace the guardrails of its building, which had become too old. A company was then chosen, but it intervened on the bridge belonging to the City. An intervention costing €52,000.
“The meatball comes from the company designated by the Region”, said Eric Goffart, the works alderman of the city of Charleroi.

The city agreed to pay the bill
Fortunately, the City Bridge barriers also needed renovation, even though this was never planned by the municipality. She therefore agreed to pay the invoice to the company, with which she must reach an agreement soon. “It’s quite normal for the municipality of Charleroi to pay for work that benefits it,” added the official.
At the same time, the guardrails of the Region bridge were finally replaced as initially planned.
