The story is Belgian but it’s not a joke. The municipality of Charleroi will have to pay the tidy sum of 52,453.50 euros for the repair of a bridge… which it had not requested. The works contractor actually chose the wrong work: he was originally mandated to renovate a bridge belonging to the Walloon Public Service and finally carried out the work on another, identical one, several hundred meters away. there on the Charleroi-Brussels canal. But which belongs to the municipality.
The affair is revealed by our colleagues from Sudinfo/La Nouvelle Gazette who describe the affair in detail after having been able to consult an official municipal document. We discover the guardrails of a Charleroi bridge have been completely renovated by a company “as part of a project initiated by the Walloon Public Service”.
Problem: the company in question confused the bridge in question with another, completely similar. But since the latter is property of the municipality, it would be up to her to pay the bill even if she did not ask for anything. The payment of the bill which amounts to more than 50,000 euros must be discussed at the next municipal council.
