When the tobacco industry overestimates the scale of the parallel market

EXCLUSIVE – The increase in the price of cigarettes does help to reduce consumption, and does not encourage smuggling as much as the manufacturers say.

The results of this study, revealed by Le Figaro, will undoubtedly encourage public authorities to further increase the price of packets of cigarettes. By analyzing the effects of rising tobacco prices on the purchasing habits of smokers, the French Observatory of Drugs and Addictive Tendencies (OFDT) – which for the first time compiled various scientific studies – issues a ground-breaking report with a whole literature published until then. Carried out in partnership with Public Health France, this one turns the neck on the studies usually produced by players in the tobacco industry. The latter make the link between price increases and the black market which, according to them, is exploding to the detriment of tobacconists who have become too expensive and deserted.

However, if there is indeed a dizzying drop in sales among the latter – almost 30% between 2014 and 2022 – the reasons are rather encouraging, according to the Observatory. This decline is largely linked to a clear decline in consumption…
