Eric Ciotti believes that Nicolas Sarkozy “prevented the right from renewing itself”

Contested president of the Republicans since his alliance with the RN, Éric Ciotti tackles the former head of state, notably on his record on immigration and security.

In fact, he is still president of the Republicans, despite his agreement with the National Rally. But that does not prevent Éric Ciotti from being very critical of the figures of the right-wing political party.

The man who has just launched his movement, the Union of the Right for the Republic, is particularly attacking former President Nicolas Sarkozy. For the Alpes-Maritimes MP, the latter is one of those responsible for the electoral fall of the Republicans.

“We did not do what we should have done on security and immigration”

In remarks reported by Le Figaro, Éric Ciotti believes that Nicolas Sarkozy has “failed and prevented the right from renewing itself.” The MP points the finger at the former president’s record on two issues in particular. “This is the first reason for the haemorrhage of our electorate: we did not do what we should have done on security and immigration.”

Last June, as early legislative elections approached, Éric Ciotti announced that the Republicans would form “an alliance with the National Rally.”

A choice that Nicolas Sarkozy had strongly criticized. “What Éric Ciotti did was not the choice of an alliance but of an absorption given the strength of the National Rally. I don’t see the point of getting on the luggage rack of a motorbike driven by Le Pen,” the former president had judged at the end of August, in an interview with Le Figaro.
