“The colonial left”: Carole Delga denounces manipulation against her by Rima Hassan, the LFI candidate for the European elections

The LFI candidate for the European elections Rima Hassan, in seventh place on Manon Aubry’s list, published a tweet on Wednesday May 8 on which we can see a photo of the president of the Occitanie region at the platform of a meeting, the finger tense and open-mouthed, accompanied by this statement: “Delga, PS: Yes, pro-Palestinian demonstrations must be banned in France”. Rima Hassan comments on this image by writing: “The colonial left”.

Carole Delga responded a few hours later on X to denounce “a montage, a fake”. The photo is very real and was taken at the meeting for the European elections of PS candidate Raphaël Glucksmann in Tournefeuille, in the suburbs of Toulouse, on Sunday March 24. Carole Delga was one of the many elected officials who spoke. But she never said this sentence in this meeting.

The sentence that accompanies it, “Yes we must ban pro-Palestinian demonstrations”, Carole Delga pronounced it well. But 7 months ago and in a completely different context. It was October 12, 2023 at Jean-Jacques Bourdin on Sud Radio, five days after the Hamas attack on Israel. The whole world was shocked by the atrocities committed against Israeli civilians. To the journalist’s question whether it was necessary to ban all pro-Palestinian demonstrations in France, the president of Occitanie replied: “Yes, because today we cannot take the risk of setting France ablaze and to be in positions which will create an opposition between Muslims and Jews. France is secular. In her response to Rima Hassan, Carole Delga clearly points out that “emotion has not allowed, to date, to hold demonstrations without risk for security and public order”.

The LFI deputy for Essonne Antoine Léaument also addresses the Occitan elected official by responding that in the 2022 legislative elections, “you caused Nupes candidates to lose and RN candidates to be elected with your dissident candidacies. disqualifies you from giving lessons on the left.”

“A manipulation”, believes Carole Delga

In her long response to Rima Hassan, Carole Delga replies that “the manipulation of information, defamation, violence, your practices dishonor you”. While recalling her attachment to freedom of expression, and repeating that “the left is about unity, progress, social justice and ecology”, Carole Delga reaffirms her position in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: “Hostage release, ceasefire, two-state solution”.

Several regional elected officials support Carole Delga

If Rima Hassan can count on the support of LFI deputies, Carole Delga received several messages of support from regional elected officials and firstly from the mayor of Toulouse Jean-Luc Moudenc. “Shameful and lamentable”, wrote the tenant of the Capitol, affirming that the regional president is the victim of an “extremely serious offense, affecting her honor”. The mayor of Toulouse also denounces “the cynical game of LFI”.

The PS mayor of Montpellier Mickaël Delafosse described Rima Hassan’s tweet as “deceitful and outrageous”, believing that her campaign for the European elections “permanently lowers the democratic debate”.
