Handball-Day of commemoration of the missing: the Senegalese Federation paid tribute to its dead

This Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Social Commission of the Senegalese Handball Federation organized a commemorative day in memory of those who died in the discipline, with religious and sporting ceremonies.

The event began with spiritual gatherings. While prayers for the deceased of Christian faith took place at the Saint Joseph church in Cluny and at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Dakar, at the same time the Rufisque public garden hosted a ceremony in the morning marked by a recital of the Quran for the deceased Muslims of handball. In the presence of eminent members of the federal office, notably Demba Baldé, also president of the Dakar Handball League, the vice-presidents, Nafi Leila president of the Marketing Commission, Aissa Sy responsible for the development of women’s handball, Ndeye Diène president of the Commission social, her husband Ndiaga Dieye Faye former international, Cherif Tall national coach U17 girls, Marody Diagne secretary general of the FSHB, the families of the missing, this Koranic reading was a moment of meditation and reflection.

In the afternoon, after a lunch break, and still in the Rufisque public garden, the commemorative day continued with two gala matches between the first two teams of the moment, in the Elite Men’s and Women’s championships. Meetings won by Disso against Golf (17-16) among the Women and by ASFA ahead of the DUC (27-25) among the Men. Two shocks contested in a spirit of competition and fair play, under the watchful eye of the president of the FSHB, Seydou Diouf, as well as members of the federal office and other distinguished guests, among whom were former internationals, the spouses and parents of the missing. At the end of the ceremony, the boss of the governing body of Senegalese handball expressed his satisfaction and thanked the organizers and participants and promised more for the next edition. “Thank you to all the teams present. This is a first edition and if it pleases God we will renew it, while hoping that the next one will be bigger. Congratulations to the team (the Social Commission of the Federation initiating the event), congratulations to the families of the deceased who came because it is their loved ones to whom we were paying tribute. That’s the spirit of handball, you’re a handball player once and a handball player always.
