His enemies, and he never missed the opportunity to have new ones, made him the indisputable holder of the chair of doctor of football, the champion of these insufferable know-it-alls who, on all subjects, provide essentially theoretical knowledge. But this smooth talker, wearing sideburns, an open shirt and a cigarette in his mouth for a long time, had been a world champion coach, the first for his country, Argentina, in 1978. Cesar Luis Menotti died on Sunday May 5 in Buenos Aires, in the age of 85.

“El Flaco” (the skinny one) fascinated Argentina like no other coach. In 2019, the AFA, the Argentine football federation, appointed him director of national selections at the age of 80, a position he retained until his death, in gratitude for having reconnected a football-mad country to his DNA. “Menotti verbalized football like few others. He was for many a conscience awakener, for others a baroque and suffocating lesson-giver,” wrote the Argentinian daily on Sunday The Nation.
