Manager Geneviève Biron, former president and general manager of Biron Groupe Santé, has been appointed head of the state-owned company Santé Québec.

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, made the announcement Monday afternoon in Quebec.

Geneviève Biron, who no longer holds an interest in her family business, was appointed for a three-year term.

“I arrive today with a different look at our health system, I want to contribute to an innovative approach and vision,” she declared.

“My focus is on access. (…) This motivation is part of a larger objective which is to increase the confidence of Quebecers in the health system,” she added, with the approval of the minister.

Minister Dubé also announced the appointment of Frédéric Abergel as executive vice-president of operations and transformation. Frédéric Abergel has been President and CEO of the University of Hospital Center since 2023.

“If we want to achieve different results, we have to think and act differently. Geneviève Biron and Frédéric Abergel are the complementary duo of managers that Quebecers need,” underlined the minister.

The Santé Québec agency was established following the adoption of Bill 15 — adopted under gag order last December — by the Assembly.

The head of Santé Québec will be the conductor of the entire health network and her main mandate will be to coordinate and evaluate the delivery of health and social services of the new agency.

Geneviève Biron will also have to ensure the availability of Santé Québec’s human, material, financial and informational resources.

The head of the new state corporation will earn $652,050 per year for the first two years of her mandate.
