Portrait of General Martin Faye, new High Commander of the National Gendarmerie in Senegal

General Martin Faye was appointed High Commander of the National Gendarmerie by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, according to a presidential decree dated April 24, 2024. This appointment comes with the promotion of Martin Faye to the rank of Major General , succeeding Lieutenant General Moussa Fall. Martin Faye was previously Second High Commander of the National Gendarmerie and Deputy Director of Military Justice, positions now held by Brigadier General Papa Diouf.

Originally from Thiès, Martin Faye joined the armed forces in 1990 after passing the competition for the National School of Active Officers (ENOA). He is also a graduate of the Cameroon War School. His military career, which spans nearly 35 years, is marked by a constant and diverse rise through several key positions. Before being promoted to general on March 2, 2021, he commanded several operational units, including the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN), which he led for six years.

General Faye has also acquired significant international experience, notably serving as head of operations of the Police component of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and holding a similar position in Congo for two years. His first mission abroad dates back to 1998 during Operation Gabou in Guinea Bissau.

Recognized for his great humility, professionalism and interpersonal skills, Martin Faye is described by his colleagues as an effective and respected leader. He is married, father of two children and is a recognized commander in the order of merit. With this new responsibility at the head of the territorial gendarmerie, he is seen as a hope for the future of the organization, bringing a renewed vision and proven leadership to one of the most strategic bodies of the national security forces.
