The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Wednesday expressed its “firm condemnation” of the terrorist attacks that struck Bamako, the capital of Mali, the day before.

ECOWAS “wishes to reaffirm its condemnation of any terrorist attack that threatens the peace and security of the populations of the West African region,” the regional organization said in a statement, reiterating its firm commitment to any initiative conducive to peace.

The capital Bamako was the scene on Tuesday of attacks unprecedented in years, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) affiliated with Al Qaeda. The human toll has not been revealed, but the Malian army spoke of “a few” losses of human life among the soldiers.

Plunged into a deep multidimensional crisis since 2012, Mali broke with ECOWAS in January at the same time as its neighbors, Burkina Faso and Niger.
