Calogero partly owes his brilliant musical career to his father, as he explained in the new issue of “A Sunday in the Country”, hosted by Frédéric Lopez this December 22. Having been deeply disappointed following an incident that occurred during his youth, the famous singer then promised himself to succeed in life.

This December 22, 2024, as the end-of-year holidays approach, Frédéric Lopez received a new trio of guests in A Sunday in the countryside : the comedian Nora Hamzawi, the novelist Valérie Perrin, married to Claude Lelouch, and the singer Calogero. As usual, the host took pleasure in collecting their many secrets in a very intimate and friendly atmosphere. From the attic of the house of the flagship program of the 2, the interpreter of Facing the sea originally from Grenoble spoke at length about his academic failure which marked his childhood.
“I'm eleven years old, I'm in middle school, I'm in sixth or fifth grade, he was a middle school principal, he was tough and he was the one who told my parents clearly 'I tell you, your son will do nothing with his life‘”reported the famous songwriter of Sicilian origin. Harsh words which, at the time, naturally shocked his parents. If Calogero Maurici, his real name, then moved towards a technical career, his obvious interest and talent for music did not escape his father who distinguished himself at the time as “house painter“. Being a fan of the group Depeche Mode, whose music is full of sounds reminiscent of pipes, the person then decides to become… a plumber!
Calogero caught red-handed to the great dismay of those close to him
“And then there is a somewhat triggering event (…) where you will feel that your father is ashamed of you“, added Frédéric Lopez. “I start stealing the Cure collection from stores. I'm crazy about the Cure and a friend said to me: 'Steal me a Bob Marley record”, added the happy father of four children who was recently the victim of a burglary in Boulogne-Billancourt. “I steal the disc from Bob Marleyexcept there is a beep. And I get caught at the new Galeries de Grenoble, and the security guards take me to the cops where my father works… As he wasn't there, they went to look for my older brother (…). He comes up and looks at me and says: 'What are you looking for? What do you want to do?!“.
At home that evening, the incident also created a heavy atmosphere. “That day, he (his father) sat in front of the TV. And he stayed like that“, recalled Calogero, miming his posture from his armchair. “And I was there… And he didn't speak to me“. A striking scene which was a trigger that he will probably never forget. Difficult for the artist to hold back his tears in front of his interlocutors. “And my life changed, I started my group a week later. I felt like I had to change… Let me prove myself. It was at that moment that I wanted to show them that I was going to do something with my life, that I was going to be passionate about (…). I think two weeks later, he was very proud because we did our first songs, and the songs were good“. And to his greatest joy, his loved ones, especially his dad, never stopped supporting him!
