“Nothing would make me share a stage with Waters”; David Gilmour closes the door to any reconciliation with Roger Waters

In a recent Q&A with The Guardian, former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour shut down speculation about a potential reconciliation with Roger Waters. In a direct and unequivocal exchange, he insisted that he would never again take the stage with his former colleague, citing deep ideological differences.

An irreversible separation

Asked by a fan about the possibility of one day seeing the iconic Pink Floyd duo reunited on stage again, Gilmour responded sharply: “Absolutely not. ” The guitarist then explained the reasons for this definitive break, notably evoking Waters’ controversial political positions: “I tend to avoid people who actively support genocidal, autocratic dictators like Putin and Maduro. Nothing would make me share a stage with someone who thinks such treatment of women and the LGBT community is acceptable.”

This declaration marks a new chapter in the long conflict which has opposed the two musicians for several decades. Although the tensions between Gilmour and Waters are public knowledge, their recent stances seem to have definitively sealed the rift between them.

A long-standing feud

The dispute between David Gilmour and Roger Waters is not new, but it has taken on a new dimension in recent years. In 2023, Polly Samson, Gilmour’s wife and collaborator, posted an inflammatory tweet in which she called Waters a“Putin apologist, liar, hypocrite, tax evader, playbacker, misogynist, sick with jealousy and megalomaniac”. Gilmour then retweeted this message, adding: “Each of these accusations is demonstrably true.”

If this outing had already largely fueled the debates, Gilmour’s recent speeches leave (very) little room for hope of reconciliation. He also admitted that the sale of Pink Floyd’s music catalog a few days ago for $400 million allowed him to draw a line under this period of his career: “Being free of decision-making and the arguments that come with it is a relief. I am not interested in this sale from a financial point of view. My only interest is to get out of this quagmire that has lasted far too long.”
