“I tarnished the name of BTS”: condemned after a nighttime incident, South Korean singer Suga regrets

BTS member SUGA was fined 10,295 euros for driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol. His license was revoked after his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

The 31-year-old singer, currently serving in the military as a social services officer, was found by police on the night of August 6 lying near his scooter. The Seoul West District Court fined him 15 million won (10,296 euros), in accordance with the sentence requested by prosecutors.

At the time of his arrest, the blood alcohol level of SUGA, whose real name is Min Yoon-gi, was 0.227%, almost three times the limit set by law for revoking his license. As a result, the singer immediately had his driving license revoked.

Despite his status as a serving soldier, the Military Administration clarified that no additional sanctions would be taken under martial law. SUGA’s case was treated as a traffic violation because the incident occurred outside of his duty hours.

Shortly after the incident, SUGA issued a letter of apology in August, expressing shame and sadness over the consequences of his action. “I have sullied the precious memories I created with my fellow members and our fans, and I have tarnished the name of BTS.”he wrote. He also acknowledged having made a “serious mistake” and said he was “deeply sorry” for this inappropriate conduct.

Since 2022, the seven members of BTS have been on “break” in order to carry out their compulsory military service in South Korea, which imposes this conscription on all men under the age of 30 due to tensions with North Korea. The group is expected to reunite at the end of this tour of duty, which marks a break in their shared musical career.
