A 25-year-old man was arrested and placed in police custody in Nîmes (Gard), Friday January 17 in the evening, as part of the investigation into the attack on a jogger in a park, announced the prosecutor of the Republic of Nîmes, in a press release consulted by franceinfo. “This is a 25-year-old man, residing in the area where the facts were committed,” said the prosecutor, Cécile Gensac. “Additional information will be released at a later date.”
The victim, a 44-year-old woman, was hit from behind with several stab wounds while she was running in a park in Vergèze. His vital prognosis was in jeopardy for a long time before his state of health stabilized. The day after the attack, the Nîmes prosecutor launched a call for witnesses, specifying that a flagrant investigation into attempted homicide had been opened. Large numbers of gendarmes were deployed on January 11 and 12 around Vergèze, with 70 gendarmes, supported by aerial means, drones and helicopters, as well as dog teams.
The investigation into attempted intentional homicide was entrusted to the research section of the Nîmes gendarmerie, with the research brigade of the Vauvert gendarmerie company and all the staff of the Gard departmental gendarmerie group.
