During a recent interview with Toby Morse on the podcast One Life One Chancethe Metallica bassist shared his vision of his role within the group, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual respect.
Support for the team
Since joining Metallica in 2003, Robert Trujillo has made it his mission to support the band rather than promote himself as the primary songwriter. Although he already had extensive writing experience with artists like Ozzy Osbourne or Suicidal Tendencies, he chose a different approach within Metallica: “I want to make sure everything flows the right way, that’s the most important thing.”

A discreet but essential involvement
Although his name does not always appear in the credits, Trujillo is present in all writing sessions. He gave a recent example with You Must Burn! on the album 72 Seasons : “Part of this song comes from a jam session with James Hetfield in the hall [où l’on fait des] settings.”
Trujillo also insists that it's not the credit that counts, but the end result: “What matters is that the song is great when finished.”
The importance of harmony in Metallica
Beyond music, Trujillo highlights the importance of human relationships in the group: “You live with these people. You must respect them, help them, and raise them.”
He also emphasizes that understanding and trust between members are essential for Metallica's longevity: “In our team, everyone gets along well. You are there for the right reasons, and you trust everyone.”
A journey marked by humility
Before joining Metallica, Trujillo had already made an impact with Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne. During his audition for Metallica in 2003, James Hetfield said he thought Trujillo was “too incredible” for the group. But this humility and collaborative approach allowed Trujillo to fit in seamlessly and play a key role in Metallica's evolution.
