Andreas Kisser from Sepultura explains that the end of the group is partly linked to the death of his wife.

The end of Sepultura marked by a reflection on life and death

On December 8, 2023, Thrash Metal band Sepultura shocked their fans by announcing their retirement after more than 40 years of career. This decision is accompanied by a world farewell tour, but this departure remains a significant step for this Metal institution. In an interview with Loud guitarist Andreas Kisser explained that the loss of his wife, Patricia Perissinoto Kisser, in July 2022, influenced the decision to end the Sepultura adventure.

Patricia died at the age of 52 from colon cancer. Kisser shared how this difficult ordeal allowed him to rediscover life from a new perspective. “Death is my greatest teacher. I learn a lot about life while respecting finitude,” he confides. For Kisser, this reflection on the end of life applies not only to individuals, but also to groups like Sepultura, who must also face their own end.

Palliative care awareness in Brazil

Since the death of his wife, Andreas Kisser has been working to improve palliative care in Brazil, where these services are often inaccessible for people in disadvantaged neighborhoods. With the support of private funds, Patricia was able to receive palliative care, but Kisser points out that many Brazilians are not so lucky. So he launched an initiative called Patfestan annual music festival aimed at raising money to finance palliative care in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

This festival aims to break the taboo of death in Brazil and raise awareness of end-of-life issues, such as euthanasia and assisted suicide. “We created this movement to inspire and encourage people in Brazil to talk about death,” Kisser explains. Thanks to the Patfesthe hopes to offer support to the most deprived and change society's outlook on the end of life.

Post-Sepultura for Andreas Kisser

With the end of Sepultura, Andreas Kisser plans to devote more time to his cause and to new projects. “Without Sepultura, without all the touring, I will have more time to devote myself to raising awareness around palliative care,” he said. However, Kisser plans to remain active in the music world, including exploring acoustic guitar and other creative endeavors. For now, he prefers “live in the present moment” and savor the farewell tour with Sepultura.
