The petition also suggested that, if the allegations are proven true, the group could have the Order of Cultural Merit awarded to them revoked, calling into question the honors BTS has received over the years. The case dates back to 2017, when a blackmail attempt involving BTS’s management company was reported. HYBE, then known as BigHit Entertainment, was accused of hiring an individual for questionable marketing activities surrounding the promotion of BTS’ album in 2015. Although the court handled the case, imposing prison sentences and fines, the details of the judgment now raise new questions about the group’s methods of promotion.

In an already tense time, BigHit Music released a statement saying legal action would be taken against those who attempt to damage BTS’ reputation. The agency expressed concern over the surge in actions aimed at defaming and slandering the group, and warned against spreading baseless rumors.
