BTS in turmoil: The huge scandal that is shaking the world of K-Pop

K-Pop is currently rocked by a potentially explosive case involving BTS and their agency, HYBE. Following a petition to South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, an official investigation was launched to look into accusations of music chart manipulation, known as “sajaegi.” This practice, which consists of artificially inflating album sales to influence the rankings, would be at the heart of the investigations.

Possible repercussions for BTS

The petition also suggested that, if the allegations are proven true, the group could have the Order of Cultural Merit awarded to them revoked, calling into question the honors BTS has received over the years. The Korea Creative Content Agency (Kocca) will take the lead in this investigation, adding an extra level of seriousness and urgency to the matter.

A look back at the 2017 incident

The case dates back to 2017, when a blackmail attempt involving BTS’s management company was reported. HYBE, then known as BigHit Entertainment, was accused of hiring an individual for questionable marketing activities surrounding the promotion of BTS’ album in 2015. Although the court handled the case, imposing prison sentences and fines, the details of the judgment now raise new questions about the group’s methods of promotion.

Response from BigHit Music

In an already tense time, BigHit Music released a statement saying legal action would be taken against those who attempt to damage BTS’ reputation. The agency expressed concern over the surge in actions aimed at defaming and slandering the group, and warned against spreading baseless rumors.

BTS’ journey

Since their debut in 2013, BTS has undeniably left its mark on the music world with albums that have crossed borders and won over millions of fans. With titles like 2 Cool 4 Skool, Wings And Map of the Soul: 7, their influence extends well beyond the music scenes. Currently, all members of the group are completing their military service, a key moment for the group and its fans.

This case not only highlights the challenges faced by artists in the music industry, but it also tests the robustness of institutions meant to ensure fairness and transparency in Korea’s music industry.
