Five things to know about the violent conflict between Drake and Kendrick Lamar

What was supposed to be a war of words between two popular rappers has become a series of serious allegations and low blows: the conflict between Drake and Kendrick Lamar is not about to fade away.

Since the release of the song Like Thatby Future, where Kendrick Lamar sent a few arrows at the Toronto artist, the two hip-hop giants attacked each other with diss tracks, these songs aim to attack a rival. Here are five things to know about the most viral argument of the moment.

From collaborators to enemies

The relationship between Drake and K.dot it’s nothing new. In 2011, they went on a world tour together. A few years later, they collaborated on the songs Buried Alive Interlude And Poetic Justice. Their relationship soured when Lamar declared that the rap throne belonged to him on the track Control in 2013.

Serious allegations

If Drake and Kendrick Lamar engage in this public war by publishing rap songs, this conflict now goes beyond music. The Compton native lit the show on the track Euphoria by accusing the Canadian of exploiting African-American culture, then the latter responded by accusing Kendrick of infidelity, and, on the song The Heart Part 6, domestic violence. The Californian, for his part, argued that Drake was a sexual predator and a pedophile, nothing less. None of these allegations have been corroborated, but don’t expect to see any of these proud rappers cover up these serious lyrics with a defamation suit.

A trap set

Hip-hop fans will remember the war of words between Drake and Pusha-T in 2018. The latter dealt the final blow to the founder of OVO Music by revealing, on the scathing The Story of Adidon, the existence of his son Adonis. Well, Lamar tried to do the same on the dark Meet the Grahams, published on Saturday, where he alleges that Drake is also hiding an 11-year-old girl from the public. Only problem: Drake would have voluntarily disclosed this false information to demonstrate the lack of rigor of his opponent.

All Against Drake

Several artists took advantage of this smear campaign to have fun at Drake’s expense. Kanye West, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky: a contingent of some of the biggest names in the hip-hop scene have a grudge against him. His use of AI to usurp the voice of Tupac Shakur, strongly denounced by the community, did not help his cause.

Montreal mentioned

Drake seems to have a particular affection for Quebec and its metropolis, where he gave two shows at the Bell Center last July. On his song Sticky, he sang “Ayy, two Sprinters to Quebec // Darling, where is my bec?”, and in the last chapter of his musical war against Kendrick, he this time mentioned Montreal. “My Montreal connects stand up, not fall down,” he raps, alluding to his unwavering connections in the city of a hundred spires.
