This One Ring problem still leaves Lord of the Rings fans perplexed

Lord of the Rings fans remain perplexed by this thorny problem linked to the One Ring.

Tl;dr

  • Fans of Lord of the Rings questions about the One Ring.
  • The Nazgûl do not pursue Gollum or Bilbo when they possess the ring.
  • This is due to Sauron’s lack of power during this period.

The mysteries of the One Ring

More than 23 years ago, the first part of the trilogy Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson was released in theaters, establishing a popularity that continues to this day. New generations continue to discover the world of Middle-earth created by JRR Tolkien. However, one question remains constantly asked by fans: that related to the One Ring and the intrigue it seems to generate.

The One Ring and its rules

In The Fellowship of the Ringwe learn that the use of the ring attracts the terrifying Nazgûl, also called the Ringwraiths. They are drawn to the ring wherever it is in Middle-earth, making it easier to track them. These ancient kings of men use this ability to hunt Frodo throughout his journey to Mordor.

But then, why did the Nazgûl never pursue Gollum or Bilbo when they had the ring? These two characters were much easier to catch, however, since neither of them was on a journey to destroy the ring.

A plausible explanation

There is indeed an answer to this question. Lord of the Rings is not based on a major inconsistency. Gollum possessed the ring for many years while living beneath the Misty Mountains. As for Bilbo, he used the ring during the events of Hobbit and used it periodically throughout his life in the Shire.

Interestingly, neither Gollum nor Bilbo were bothered by the Nazgûl during the decades they possessed the ring. It is only when Frodo inherits it that they set out in pursuit.

The link between Sauron and the Nazgûl

The reason for all this lies with Sauron himself, as well as the specific powers of the Nazgûl. The powers of the Nazgûl are linked to those of Sauron, to whom they are entirely connected. So during the years when Sauron did not have his power, the Nazgûl were not at their peak either. More importantly, Sauron was not searching for the ring during the entire time he was spending recovering his strength.

When Gollum and Bilbo had the ring, no one tried to find it. It is not until Sauron gives the order to find the ring and sends them to Middle-earth (at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring) that they start tracking when and where the ring slips on someone’s finger. That someone happens to be Frodo Baggins of the Shire.
