The trailer for the new little oddity distributed by A24 has just dropped, and Death of a Unicorn promises to be a completely crazy trip.
The trailer for Death of a Unicorn immediately displays the words “by the studio ofEverything Everywhere All at Once”, and this is no coincidence. The film by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert with Michelle Yeoh aroused curiosity and enthusiasm across the world in 2022 thanks to its absurd, eccentric and overexcited sideand it seems that this new curiosity wants to play the same cards.
First feature film written and directed by Alex Scharfman, who notably produced the films House of Spoils et Resurrection, Death of a Unicorn tells the story of a young girl and her father who, while in a car, accidentally knock over what appears to be… a unicorn. Soon, the driver’s collaborators will want to exploit the exceptional virtues of the animal’s horn, without considering the consequences of their greed.
A pitch just as crazy as the casting of the film, which counts no less than Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni and Richard E. Grant.
Death of a unicorn and its supercharged trailer
The whole success of this trailer is to turn entirely around the unicorna fantastic animal which, a priori, has nothing to do there, and whose characters can barely believe the existence, but without ever really showing it. A distant silhouette in the background, a piece of horn here, a close-up of an eye there… The real star of the film is her, but she makes herself desired.
However, certain images suggest, despite the film’s title, that the unicorn won’t necessarily stay dead the whole timeand will not remain white as snow either, since it seems little by little to change into horrifying wereunicorn-like creature. Unless there are several unicorns? Opposite, the characters all seem more Western than the others, except Jenna Ortega who serves as a rational anchor in her skin.sulking teenager in the middle of this pile of adults motivated by profit.
The actress once again confirms her attraction to offbeat genre productions while the absurd lines fly, situations without tails or horns follow one anotherand everything seems to go down the drain to the sound of the Beach Boys singing Good Vibrations. It almost looks like Quentin Dupieux boosted with coke. Funny detail that is not visible in these images: the music of the film is composed by a certain… John Carpenterassisted by his son Cody Carpenter and musician Daniel Davies. It’s the absurd icing on the cake of absurdity.
Produced by Secret Engine and distributed by A24, therefore, Death of a Unicorn is still a project about which we know relatively little, but which now very much attracts our curiosity, and which we hope will live up to its astonishing trailer. Release planned for spring 2025.
