Tom Leeb plays a sexy thirty-something, a stripper in his spare time, in “Les Cadeaux”, alongside Camille Lellouche and Gérard Darmon, in theaters from December 25, 2024. But today, the 34-year-old Frenchman with multiple talents would like to see this handsome guy label that sticks to him disappear.
What made you want to star in this Christmas comedy, “The Gifts”?
Tom Lee: I liked the story and the rather scathing humor of the scenario. However, at first glance, to be honest, the role I was offered scared me a little because it’s the kind of character I’m trying to run away from at the moment. But ultimately, there was a lot of comedy to be had from this role, so I liked it. And the idea of playing with Camille Lellouche, who is an actress that I really like, also motivated me.
Do you have the impression that you are only hired for handsome roles in the cinema?
Yes, and it was because I had the feeling of being limited that I decided to change course by refusing this type of character. I noticed that the people who hire the actors were always a little forced to think that about me, because I was always going there. So it was up to me to prove that I wanted to do something else by giving up this type of role, until I was offered the one in “The Gifts”, which I really liked. I think you have to attract people through something else, because what’s exciting for an actor is to play roles that escape him, that are very far from who he is.
Is it an advantage or a disadvantage to be the son of comedian Michel Leeb?
Neither. It’s up to me to get out of this judgment. But I put some pressure on myself. Between leaving adolescence where we want to exist and be recognized for who we are, and then the first steps in this career where we need to know if we are committed to a project because we are who we are or because we are “the son of”, the pressure is inevitable. But today, I have matured and I have detached myself from all that. So I live it very well and I hardly think about it anymore.
Did your father encourage you in your career choice?
Yes, he has always supported me in all my projects. He always had a very benevolent view of my work. He never took up too much of a role by claiming to know the profession better than me, given his experience. He knew how to stay in his place and only gives me wise advice.
In addition to being an actor, you are also a comedian and singer. Do you have a preference?
I find so much pleasure in each of these areas that I couldn’t choose. When you are an artist and you have several passions, I find it important to be able to exploit them all to the fullest. The main idea is to express yourself. I would also like to be able to direct a film one day.
You have just released your third album entitled “Bedrock”.
Yes, it includes 14 tracks that I co-composed with the Swiss-German producer, Ben Mühletahler. He worked with Prince and many other successful Swiss artists. He has become a friend and I truly carry him in my heart!
