An impressive science fiction film, one of the most mythical fantasy adventures in history and more. 9 essential home theater releases from December 2024 for this Christmas

The last month of the year is inexorably marked by the celebration of Christmas, days marked by food and gifts. The physical publishers know this and that is why they are putting all their effort into the releases this December 2024. Therefore, on this occasion I propose a selection of 9 essential new items in physical format what you have below:

‘Alien Romulus’, steelbook in 4K

Fede Álvarez dared to try his luck in this mythical science fiction saga and has emerged victorious despite staying somewhat far from both the original Ridley Scott as from its first sequel made by James Cameron.

For its jump to the physical format, Divisa is selling this edition in a metal box with a perhaps somewhat overloaded design on the front due to the presence of so many characters. I confess that I personally like the design of the simple UHD edition better. -you can get it for 26.99 euros-, since it is much cleaner and more effective.

Regarding the content, the utmost care is evident to offer the best possible audiovisual experience, since we are facing one of those editions that make it very clear why the physical format is superior to streaming. With the extras, perhaps more depth in the documentaries would have been appreciated, but it is curious to have a chat between Scott and Álvarez and the featurette about one of the most celebrated scenes in the film, well worth your attention.

‘Bitelchús Bitelchús’, steelbook in 4K

Tim Burton recovered the mythical character played by Michael Keaton in a late sequel that devastated the box office, especially in the United States, and now wants to do so also in the physical market with a much more careful edition than usual in many recent Hollywood blockbusters.

It is true that we have only received one version of the steelbook in Spain – in Italy you can choose between three different options – but it is a quite attractive design, and in the end the content of the disc is more important. In purely audiovisual terms we are faced with an unquestionable edition, but it also comes with a good amount of extras.

There may be many of those short documentaries that leave you wanting more, but there is also a longer behind-the-scenes featurette and a fairly detailed audio commentary by Burton himself. It will cost you 32.99 euros if you can find it in stock. Otherwise, you have the option of the simple UHD edition for 24.95 euros – although right now it has a small discount on Amazon, where you can get it for 23.75 euros.

‘The Sixth Sense’, steelbook in 4K

What was the highest-grossing horror film of all time for almost 20 years and also had one of the most talked-about endings in the history of cinema. It was time for it to make the leap to 4K, where it is fair to highlight that it first appeared on sale in November in a simple edition with a case for 25.99 euros.

However, Divisa had already warned then that it would be in December when this edition in a metallic box, essential for fans of this film by M. Night Shyamalan and it will cost you 32.99 euros. It is true that its audiovisual quality is not pure reference, but it does have a great finish and has a considerable leap with respect to the Blu-ray edition that began to be marketed 16 years ago. The only downside is the lack of any kind of new extra.

By the way, it is not the only metal case edition of one of Shyamalan’s most valued films that goes on sale this month, as you can also get the steelbook of ‘Signs’ for 32.99 euros.

‘The House’

One of the best films of the year arrives in physical format with an edition that lives up to the high level exhibited by this excellent adaptation of the comic by Paco Roca. Nor does it surprise me coming from the hand of A Contracorriente Filmsbut the only thing missing here is that it was also available in 4K. For example, I often complain when an audio commentary is not included, but that detailed documentary of more than an hour about the filming made by the director himself Alex Montoya it more than makes up for it. You can get it for 19.95 euros

Review of ‘The House’

‘The Professional (León)’, steelbook in 4K

The wonderful action thriller that launched the career of Natalie Portman and that ended up confirming Luc Besson as one of the most powerful filmmakers of the 90s. An edition with a simple but elegant steelbook whose main problem is inside: only the extended cut of the film is included, which is unanimously considered inferior to what could see in cinemas. It’s a shame that the final package spoils, since other markets do have access to both versions. You can get it for 32.99 euros

‘Pulp Fiction’, limited 30th anniversary edition in 4K

The acclaimed film Quentin Tarantino It finally makes its debut in 4K in Spain. It also does so with two different editions. On the one hand we have a simpler one but with an iridescent cover that gives it a touch of distinction. On the other hand, a limited edition for its 30th anniversary is quite striking despite the sober design of its rigid outer cardboard sleeve – although there you can see that the one Warner put in for the edition of ‘With Death on the Heels’ was much more resistant.

Inside we have the film with a sleeve with a folding cover focused on the mythical dance between the characters of John Travolta and Uma Thurman. Then there are some physical extras that are quite curious for the most collectors, but the additional contents that, for example, the collector’s edition on Blu-ray that Emon released a few years ago did have, are greatly missed. It will cost you 39.99 euros.

‘Alone’ on blu-ray’

The film that almost overshadowed ‘All About My Mother’ 25 years ago debuts on Blu-ray taking advantage of that anniversary. At last we will be able to enjoy in high definition this excellent first film by Benito Zambrano in which the work of its two protagonists stood out. And if you want to know what happened to Ana Fernández and María Galianathis edition includes a reunion between the two whose conversation logically revolves around ‘Solas’. If, on the other hand, you are more interested in what happened when the film was made, pay attention to the video with the casting tests that Zambrano himself has given the opportunity to. Essential. Its recommended retail price is 19.95 euros, but right now you have it on sale on Amazon for 17.38 euros.

‘Willow’, steelbook en 4K

One of the most beloved fantasy films of the 80s, which recently had a sequel in the form of a television series that did not enjoy the expected success. In fact, Disney+ even mercilessly removed it from its catalog. However, what interests us now is the presentation of this film directed by Ron Howard in 4K in a very careful edition in the audiovisual section, although without becoming one of those discs that can be shown to show everything that a UHD is capable of.

Regarding the extras, there is nothing new compared to the previous edition on Blu-ray, but at least none are lost along the way. In fact, everything indicates that the second disc of the edition is the same blu-ray that was already sold at the time and that was once out of print in Spain. This beautiful steelbook can be yours for 32.99 euros.

‘Zombies Party’, new steelbook in 4K

Its inclusion may be a little surprising because a metal box edition of the brilliant debut of Edgar Wright at the time, but this includes a remastered version of higher audiovisual quality that features Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for the first time. And what a marvel the design of the steelbook is, one of those that you would like to have even if you don’t particularly enjoy the movie. And if you love it, as is my case, I won’t even tell you.

And also to celebrate its 20th anniversary there is a new extra in which Wright, Simon Pegg y Nick Frost They chat about the film, remembering its origins, such as the fact that the first two began their friendship in part because of their common love of cinema. George A. Romero. It lasts almost 25 minutes, but be careful, you have to enter the disc in the English option to see it.

It comes out at a reasonable price of 27.95 euros, but it is already very difficult to find – although it is well worth trying, as even the interior design has been taken care of with an attractive design inspired by the fact that it is the first installment of the trilogy. del Cornetto-. Then it will be a matter of time before the simple version comes out in 4K.

Other releases

Although this month I have even expanded the list of featured titles, things have fallen somewhat short, since December It is being a great month for lovers of the physical format. If you don’t believe me, keep in mind that an undisputed classic like ‘The African Queen’ is also being released for the first time in 4K; at last we will also have a licensed Blu-ray edition of a comedy masterpiece like ‘Being or no Ser’ or the second pack dedicated to cinema Fernando Fernan Gomez in high definition by A Contracorriente.

Now focusing on more current titles, we will finally be able to have ‘The Wait’ at home, one of the best Spanish films of recent years, not to mention the arrival in high definition of that animated delight titled ‘Robot Dreams’. And if you are looking for a strong pack ideal to give as a gift these dates, look out for the collection of Aki Kaurismaki published by Avalon or the collector’s edition of ‘Interstellar’ that comes to us coinciding with the tenth anniversary of its release.

And I still left out many titles, but what is certain is that this Christmas we have a lot to choose from if we want to give movies as gifts.
