Critics fail it, but viewers are having a great time with this Christmas adventure movie with Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans
It premiered last November in movie theaters, but we barely had to wait to see it available in the catalog of a streaming platform: directed by Jake Kasdan and starring none other than Dwyane Johnson and Chris Evans, the action-adventure comedy Red One has quickly landed on Prime Video all the way.
As confirmed by the platform itself, the Christmas movie, in fact, has broken an all-time record for the streaming service, attracting 50 million viewers worldwide in its first four days. Thus, although Red One has not been one of the year’s big stars at the box office in its brief run in theaters, it does have the honor of being Amazon MGM Studios’ most watched film debut on the platform.
An incredible reception that, without a doubt, is the best news for everyone involved, since the film starring Dwayne Johnson had cost 250 million dollars, a huge budget that had fallen far short of the film’s box office collection. .
On the first day of the week, Red One It was released with a gross in the US of just 32 million dollars and, in total, the film managed to raise 175.5 million at the box office, far from financial profitability.
Likewise, the critical reception was not much better from specialized critics although, as the notes in Rotten Tomatoes by critics (30%) and viewers (90%), the film is one of those films that experts don’t like but that does manage to give the audience a good time. Something that also demonstrates its good reception on the streaming platform.
“Kasdan’s film has good intentions when it tries to evoke those adventure films of the 90s, but it only brushes the proposal with its fingers,” says Andrea Zamora in her 3/5 star review for SensaCine. “Chris Evans, who plays Jack O’Malley, tries really hard to make his character work, but he and Johnson don’t have much chemistry and their performances are unbalanced.”
Just in the hot phase before Christmas, Santa Claus disappears without a trace. It quickly becomes clear that the night’s protagonist, codenamed in security circles is Red One, has apparently been kidnapped, so Callum Drift (Johnson) quickly jumps into action as North Pole’s head of security to solve the case. and bring Santa Claus back on time. Also joining the mission is Jack O’Malley (Evans), one of the most famous bounty hunters on the planet and, in Callum Drift’s opinion, not an easy person to work with.
