Between striking coincidences and crucial choices, this reflection on love and destiny promises to be moving.
This Sunday, December 15, 2024, at 9:10 p.m., France 2 will offer its faithful a new French film for its cinema evening. While TF1 will broadcast Black Adam by Jaume Collet-Serra, the Deux will rely on The Whirlwind of Life by Olivier Treiner, who is directing the first feature film of his career. After receiving the César for best short film for The Tuner in February 2012, the filmmaker took on the challenge of a longer format ten years later. Released on December 21, 2022, as the end-of-year holidays approached, this drama did not find its audience in cinemas, bringing together only 200,631 curious people.
For this project, Olivier Treiner decided to feature coincidences. Lou de Laage, who played in Jappeloup by Christian Duguay (2013), Black box by Yann Gozlan (2021) or even Stroke of luck by Woody Allen (2023), plays the heroine named Julia and interprets her at all ages of her life. At the end of her life, she questions the role that chance played in her personal history. If she had not let her book slip away that day, would she have met Paul Sorel (Raphaël Personnaz)? Or would his journey have followed a completely different trajectory? For her, all it took was one tiny detail that changed everything so many times. She could have taken other paths and become a completely different woman. Do we choose our destiny? What does love or happiness come from?
The Whirlwind of Life echoes the story of Olivier Treiner
To tell this plot, Olivier Treiner was inspired by situations he experienced, notably the meeting with his wife Camille, with whom he wrote the screenplay. So, both students, they were particularly fond of the same table in a café without knowing it: “I offered to share it, she sat down, we spent the day talking, and we never left each other’s side.confides the director in the press kit for the film. A few weeks later, I mentioned this meeting to my brother. Then I asked him about his love life, and he told me that he had also met a young girl, in a completely different place and circumstances, and that they were going out together. After a few minutes of discussion, we realized that they were sisters.“, he explained. A touching anecdote which will undoubtedly appeal to new viewers this Sunday evening on France 2.
