Alien Romulus Sequel Must Avoid This Problem, Director Says

Fede Alvarez, director ofAlien Romulusgave his point of view on the ideal method to miss a possible Romulus 2.

Since its launch in 1979 under the direction of Ridley Scott, the saga Alien has established itself as a pillar of horror science fiction. Subtle mix of claustrophobic tension, disgusting monsters and reflection on human nature, after two mythical first episodes, a Alien 3 which was a real nightmare, and a Alien Resurrection that our Geoffrey will defend whatever happens, the franchise has gone astray.

In 2012, Prometheus largely divided the public, and in 2017, Alien : Covenant was a huge box office flop. But Alien : Romulus proved that the franchise was still profitable, provided you didn’t mess around with the xenomorph.

With this opus, Fede Alvarez has chosen to return to a more minimalist formula, close to the spirit of the original film, with an oppressive closed door and truly horrible aliens. While a sequel to Alien Romulus is increasingly mentioned, the director is cautious, warning against the risk of falling into what he calls “the recipe for disaster”.

“Stop with your sequels!!! »

A sequel to Alien Romulus, but not just any way

In an interview published by the site Gizmodo on November 22, 2024, Fede Alvarez spoke at length aboutAlien Romulus. Not only did he welcome the release in collector’s VHS format of his film (it is the first official VHS release distributed by Disney in 30 years), but he also focused on the conditions for the success of a possible following Romulus.

According to him, when sequels to cult franchises are limited to recycling familiar elements without any real narrative and creative evolution, this directly leads to alienating the public. And above all, you should not make a sequel just because the previous part had good commercial results.

“Otherwise, we must never fall into the error of making [une suite] just because the first one was a big success… [faire une suite] just because you can do it is always a recipe for disaster. »

Our look when we saw the Offspring

Fede Alvarez says he’s definitely up for taking over the reins of a movie Alien. However, he made it clear that, despite rumors of a sequel to Alien Romulus increasingly insistent, he will embark on this project only if the story of this next part really holds up:

“Well, I mean we definitely want to do it. The studio wants to do it. I want to do it. I think with sequels it’s always about finding the right story. Me and Rodo [Sayagues]my co-writer, we have some ideas, but it’s only when we find something that makes us say, “Okay, this is a movie worth making” that we really go for it. . So that’s the process we’re in now, trying to find a story that’s worth spending time on and worthy of the title. »

Romulus is also a big dose of fan-service

While waiting for the official start of construction on the sequelAlien Romulusthe xenomorphs will be entitled to their first live series, which will have planet Earth as its playground, with Alien : Earth, scheduled for release on Disney+ during summer 2025.

Disney also confirmed that a new film Alien vs Predator was in preparation. For his part, Ridley Scott affirmed that Covenant deserved a sequel more than Fede Alvarez’s film. It remains to be seen whether all these projects do not risk colliding into an immense cinematographic universe. Alienat the risk of losing spectators.
