Aged 62, Tom Cruise doesn’t seem to want to retire anytime soon. A few days ago, the American actor released the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth (and perhaps final) opus, on his Twitter account.
The plane: yes, paper: no
The star of the films Top Gun (1986) et Minority Report (2002) no longer needs to be presented. The distinguished actor is the face of the saga Mission Impossible for almost thirty years (the first film was released in 1996). However, one of the things for which he is most admired is the fact that he always performed his own stunts and shot his own scenes. Climbing the Burj Khalifa, the tallest skyscraper in the world, or becoming the first actor to perform an operational fall (a military-style parachute jump), nothing is impossible for him.
One of its most famous waterfalls was made for the filming of Mission : Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) : hanging on the side of a plane flying at over 300 km/h at an altitude of 1500 meters. According to a recent survey conducted by Samsung, this Tom Cruise stunt rises to second place for the best movie stunts of the story (the first being Keanu Reeves leaning back to dodge bullets in Matrix).
But for the next Mission Impossible, the actor would have evaded his golden rule. In fact, production would have incurred a doublewhat’s more for filming a scene it couldn’t be simpler: turn a page.
A frantic pace
No, this is not a joke, at least if we are to believe the British daily The Mirror. It was one of their sources on the set of the film who told them this:
Tom is known for performing his own stunts […]. More they hired a double to turn a page. This was to allow an exhausted Tom to rest – he worked extremely hard to complete the film. But I don’t see how turning a page would have added to his fatigue.
It is not known if this double will be used for other scenes and potentially stunt work, which would be understandable given the Hollywood star’s relatively advanced age. As a reminder, the film with a huge budget should arrive on May 23, 2025, the penultimate day of the Cannes festival. We have no further news on the continuation of the saga, but it could very well be the Ethan Hunt’s latest adventuremuch to the dismay of Tom Cruise.
