Promoting the film Minecraft, The Movie continues, and the new trailer confirms that this isn’t the most original adaptation possible.
All the huge video game franchises must now go there, and Minecraft will be no exception. The viral game designed by Notch will have the right to its film directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) with Jack Black (as the hero Steve) and Jason Momoa (as Jason Momoa). The project raised a lot of eyebrows and for good reason: with its pixelated cubic design and its emphasis on creativity, Minecraft was not the ideal candidate to go through the mill of Hollywood studios.
Frowned eyebrows which gave way to a general gluteal tightening in front of the first trailer, received rather lukewarmly by the public and especially the players. The trailer “official” of Minecraft, The Moviereleased on November 19, 2024, will it relax everyone a little?
A Minecraft movie, and that’s it
This adaptation faces the same problem as its peers: how to make cinematic a universe whose rules are essentially video games, or even a universe where the narration passes almost exclusively through gameplay? And she falls back on the same solution: the similar-Jumanjiwith real-life characters who fall via who knows what portal or magical bauble into the game’s space-time.
A recipe that has already proven itself (the film Mario has well exceeded a billion dollars at the box office) and which also allows the environments of the source material to be reproduced with close animation and in 3D. The fashion is no longer for trampling on licenses, but for their religious respect and of course fan service. A you fan service, Minecraft, The Movie clearly not lacking.
Enough to fear a mound of forced nudges and winks, from the first seconds of this trailer, reference to a meme (« The children yearn for the mines ») that your grandmother may not recognize right away. So this is another one of those strange productions that tries to appeal to both American families and web surfers. Let’s hope she doesn’t mess up too much this time. Verdict on April 2, 2025 in French theaters.
