In fact, I find that it is the weakest of the three…The problem is that there is so much happening in so many places that, unlike The Fellowship of the Ringwhere everyone is gathered for the trip, we no longer really know who does what. […] I think there are some wonderful things in this film, but a lot of the battle scenes and special effects should have been removed, and further develop the characters.
