Adèle Exarchopoulos finds herself in a Ready Player One prison in the trailer for Planet B.
The Beast, Meanwhile on Earth or even Mars ExpressFrench science fiction cinema has reached great heights in recent times, proof that the genre has its place (in its own way) in French production.
Add to that Adèle Exarchopoulos, who is currently coming off the monster success of Love phew by Gilles Lellouche, and you have a very tempting combo there. The film in question is called Planet B. this is the second feature film by Aude Léa Rapin (already behind Heroes never die with Adèle Haenel), including the intriguing trailer has just been released.
Planet B: sci-fi from home
The year is 2039. In a world where police oppression has transformed France into an authoritarian state (can we still speak of science fiction at this stage?), Julia Bombarth (Exarchopoulos) mysteriously disappears with other activists, after having fatally injured a CRS. She realizes that she has been locked in Planet B, a virtual world that serves as a new kind of prison.
The falsely idyllic imagery of this house by the sea actually hides methods of torture which will gradually pit the various prisoners against each other. Unless Nour (Souheila Yacoub) knows how to get them out of there.
It must be admitted that behind its original concept, a sort of mix between Ready Player One and prison cinema, Planet B sports an eminently political science fiction, carried by a punchy aesthetic in its first images, which evoke, among other things, the yellow vest movement and its repression.
Planet B was presented in world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024. As for its release in France, the film will be visible in cinemas from December 25, 2024.
