sensational trailer for this one-of-a-kind post-apocalyptic survival

The end of the world takes a surprising turn in the magnificent trailer for the post-apocalyptic survival The End.

2023 was marked by the coronation of Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan. The film obviously recounted the life of the famous physicist, but more than that, it spoke of the lasting impact of his creation, nuclear weapons having forever changed the course of history. At a time of the Russo-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian wars, its power has never been so highlighted since the end of the Cold War and fear of its use is growing. For what ? Simply because it could cause the extinction of humanity and the world.

The end of the world is precisely the subject of The End which will tell the story of a wealthy family living in a bunker after the Earth is destroyed by an apocalypse. Fun fact, it’s Joshua Oppenheimer (no relation to Robert J. Oppenheimer), director of the documentaries The Look of Silence et The Act of Killing, who staged this post-apocalyptic survival by adding… musical comedy. A confusing choice that the trailer teases wonderfully with its fabulous cast led by Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon and George MacKay.

THE END OF THE WORLD

What really happened? Is the world plunging into a new ice age? Faced with these first images, it’s impossible not to be taken aback. As the story takes shape, with this family living in this luxury bunker disturbed by the arrival of a stranger (Moses Ingram), other questions gradually arise. Who is she? How did she get here? How did she survive the external apocalypse?

The trailer for The End initially promises a fairly classic little post-apocalyptic thriller… but that was without taking into account the singing voice accompanying these images. The more the trailer progresses, the more the music becomes crucial.the characters singing alone, in duets or in chorus, while dancing with each other. A few months later Emilia Perez et Joker 2, who hid their musical identity in their promotion for fear of a bad reaction from the public, it is therefore a big gamble on the part of Neon to sell The End.

Yellow laughter?

In two minutes, the trailer for Joshua Oppenheimer’s first fiction film gives a few chills thanks to its musical numbers, its songs and also the interaction of its characters. The film lasts 2h28, the trailer probably doesn’t show that much, but it does emerge. a unique atmosphere, a kind of dire poetry where human bonds come back to life after being broken by the apocalypse.

With the mix of plans in the very cold bunker, the desire for freedom of certain characters (these plans in the salt mine) and the quest for truth of the son of the family, the trailer promises a great, poignant journey. The first critical reviews, rather positive (70/100 average on Metacritic), notably spoke of an apocalyptic fable “bold and captivating”which is very exciting. In the United States, the film will be released on December 6, 2024. On the other hand, in , it does not yet have an official release date nor a distributor.
